These metal swivels can be driven into the ground with a hammer (assuming the ground is soft enough where you're at). Welded into one end of the spike is a metal ring that swivels freely, rotating around the steel shank and allowing your pet to move in circles without binding up their chain - or rope. I put Buddy and Dixie on their chains rarely and usually pick places for us to go based on that criteria alone. If the mutts have to be restrained, we'll just keep on looking until we find a place where they won't have to be. Generally the more secluded you are the easier it is to get away with this. It also helps to have well behaved dogs. I have gone places with them before where leashes and chains were absolutely necessary and these little swivels have come in handy more than once.
